DIY Best Dad Ever Tshirt (Free Silhouette Cameo Tutorial)

So I’m obviously a little late with this post, but this DIY Best Dad Ever tshirt tutorial makes a great gift for a father, and not just on Father’s Day. Think about birthdays, holidays, and “just because” gifts. This is a super easy tutorial that I’m not even adding in a cut file. You can whip this bad boy up in 30 minutes or less!

How to Make Best Dad Ever Tshirt on a Silhouette Cameo

  1. Open Silhouette Studio.
  2. Type out Best. Dad. Ever. You can use one combined text tool if you are using the same font for the whole thing (like I did). If not, I’d recommend adding each word as a separate text box.
  3. Choose The font you want. I thought a more basic font would look best.
  4. (Optional) add a hashtag or key phrase. We always tag our instagram photos of Livvy with #LivvySue so I thought it would be cute to add. Also, it makes it look like it was from her!
  5. Make sure to mirror the text! You’ve probably heard this a million times, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten!
  6. Choose your cut settings and place your HTV on your cutting mat.
  7. Cut the file.
  8. Weed the text. The only thing left should be the words already on the transfer tape.
  9. Line it up exactly how you want it to look and then use an iron or heat press to transfer it. I don’t have a heat press yet, and I held the iron firmly down for approximately 40 seconds for each word. If you go to peel the transfer tape off and the words are coming with it, put it back and apply heat for longer.

A Few Tips for Success

  • Wash the shirt inside out the first time to help preserve the heat transfer vinyl. I forgot to do this, and mine was still fine!

  • Don’t skip the test cut. I personally haven’t had the best luck with my Silhouette Cameo 3 cutting deep enough on the auto blade for most materials, including heat transfer vinyl. Since HTV isn’t cheap, save yourself time and money and do the test cut!!
  • Remove it SLOWLY. If you go to rip it off and it isn’t fully transferred, you’re likely to rip the letters, especially if it’s a thin script font.
  • HTV can be confusing for newbies. One of the most common problems is cutting the wrong side of the HTV. If you did a test cut and you’re cutting the proper side, then I have found this HTV guide by Silhouette School to be really handy.
