DIY Santa’s Sleigh with Snow Ornament + Free Cut File

I’ve seen these adorable Santa’s Reindeer ornaments with fake snow all over Pinterest but could not find a good tutorial. After some brainstorming, I came up with a super easy DIY Santa’s Sleigh with Snow Ornament using a free cut file for the . I will also share with you how I created realistic-looking snow through some trial and error!

What NOT To Do for Fake Snow

Learn from my mistakes! I made about 5 ornaments spraying fake snow into them. It looked so realistic and perfect! I had them completely finished and all lined up ready to go into gift bags. Luckily, I had them out overnight before wrapping them up. They leaked water from the fake snow and the snow turned clumpy and dark! I tried taking the tops of the off and letting them air dry, and draining some of the water, but it was a fail.

How to Make the Fake Snow

After my snow fail, I was at a loss. I tried shredded tissue paper (looked fake.) I also tried batting, confetti, and sugar. Sugar was probably closest, but I wanted the snow to look REAL! I glanced over at the bath bombs I had just made and a light bulb went off. Some of it had crumbled and one had kind of exploded and dried. It took some work, but I broke it up and voila!! It looked even better than the spray snow!

An attempt at using batting as fake snow. Not realistic enough!

So the answer? Make bath bombs! Use some to crush and add into an ornament or pour it in and let it dry. You need to leave the cap off the ornament at least 24 hours. I didn’t do mine this way (because of what I stated above), but I bet it dries pretty and you don’t have to go through the hassle of breaking it up once it’s dry (it’s hard! I used a hammer). However, if you want the “snowflake” look like below, then go ahead and crush it. I just folded it in wax paper and used a hammer.

Crushed “snow” and poured in with a funnel.

Fake Snow Recipe

This is the basic recipe for bath bombs. If you’re only doing a few ornaments, cut it down by half or even a quarter! This is enough to make 1 large bath bomb (think Lush), just to give you an idea.

Ingredients

1/4 cup

1/8 cup cornstarch

1/8 cup

2 tsp melted

1 tsp water

Directions

  1. Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Slowly add in wet ingredients, whisking thoroughly.
  3. Once the mixture becomes clumpy, pour into the ornament with a funnel or spread out on wax paper to dry.
  4. Let dry approximately 24 hours. Maybe less, depending on how thick you make the snow.

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • ⅛ cup cornstarch
  • ⅛ cup citric acid
  • 2 tsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 tsp water
Instructions

Once your fake snow is made and poured into the ornament, then you can close it and add a pretty ribbon or bell to it. I would wait to add Santa and his sleigh until you’ve filled the ornament with snow, as you can angle him to appear like he is taking off into flight from the snow! It has the appearance of a floating ornament without trying to cram and measure everything inside! I did not design the cut file, but here is the link to the free one I used! You can also find similar ones on the Silhouette Design Store!
